Discovering the City

My most recent Philly discovery: FABRIC ROW.

Yes, a lovely little stretch in South Philly that features 18 fabric and trimmings shops plus lots of other cute shops.  I.can't.wait!  Especially since my current hobby of choice is learning to sew. We'll see how long it lasts, but at least I should have some skills by the time we move to Philly and I can frequent fabric row. 

And yes, we're cheering for the Phillies tonight playing game 3 of the world series!

The Corratock Place

This was where we lived last year at this time. It is a beautiful revolutionary war era house full of history surrounded by acres of woods and marshlands. Jason's family called it the Corratock property after the Native American tribe that (I presume) used to be settled in this part of Virginia.


Below was our view of the Chesapeake Bay from the side yard. Well, perhaps it is actually an inlet off of the Bay, but you get the idea. It is a great place to enjoy the outdoors, relax, and get away. The tricky part was, we weren't trying to retreat. Yet, at the house we had no internet, no cell phone signal, no mail (or trash) service, and only 1 tv channel (which did allow us to watch The Office and 30 Rock every Thursday!)




Everyday we had to drive 15 miles "into town" to meet with the people we needed to and experience "modern conveniences" :) It was pretty rustic! It was also difficult for me as I adjusted to the different lifestyle. I thought I would miss coffee shops with Wi-fi, but we were blessed to discover not one but two great local places!! I never knew how attached I was to things like being less than 20 minutes from the grocery store and being able to walk to the laundry room. On a peninsula full of small towns, I found I was much more the "city girl" than I thought. Jason knew I was getting a taste for things when I eagerly anticipated our 1.5 hour drive to the mall for shopping and the closest movie theater with current films!

I never did enjoy sharing our house with the wasps and critters that moved in once the weather turned cold, but there were many other things I learned to love. Some of our adventures at the Corratock place included canoe rides and lunches by the pond, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, following a deer blood trail, making our own bread, board games by the fire, and starry nights with no end.

Today our blog begins, thanks to a great name from Jason and a less than ideal layout picked by me. It will probably definitely undergo more changes, but it's time to move forward!

For us, this is a place to remember our journey as newlyweds moving from country and suburbs to the city to work with college students in Philadelphia. Come along for the ride!
